About Afro Labour Rights Initiative (ALARI)

The Afro Labour Rights Initiative (ALARI) is a company limited by guarantee, based in Uganda, dedicated to promoting employment justice, just transition, and fair Labour migration practices across Africa. In response to the challenges posed by climate change, we advocate for a just transition for workers, ensuring they are equipped, protected, and empowered as economies shift toward sustainability. As Labour migration continues to grow and the externalization of Labour increases, we recognize the critical need to harmonize practices and safeguard workers from exploitation. We strive to create a future where businesses and workers can thrive in a fair and secure Labour environment, where Labour migration systems protect workers’ rights, uphold dignity, and contribute to global economic fairness. At ALARI, we are committed to addressing the key drivers of Labour market transformation, including technological advancements, globalization, demographic shifts, skills development, and environmental sustainability. We do this through consultancy, research, advocacy, strategic litigation, partnerships, key stakeholder and community engagement, all geared towards a just workforce in Uganda and across Africa.

Our Mission

To champion employment justice, just transition and fair labour migration systems for a more inclusive and sustainable future.

Our Mission

An empowered and just workforce across the African Continent.

Areas of Focus

We are committed to addressing the key drivers of Labour market transformation, including technological advancements, globalization, demographic shifts, skills development, and environmental sustainability.

Just transition is a principle that guides ALARI’s efforts to ensure that workers are not left behind in the global shift toward sustainability. As industries adopt green practices and cleaner technologies, it is vital that workers are equipped with the resources to transition into new roles, sectors, and ways of working. ALARI advocates for policies that protect and empower workers during these transitions, pushing for retraining, upskilling, and fair compensation. Through our work, we are committed to creating an economy where environmental goals and other key drivers for a labour market transformation and labour rights go hand in hand, fostering an inclusive green future that benefits both the workers and the businesses. This commitment contributes to SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) by ensuring that the shift to sustainable industries is equitable and just for all.

At the heart of ALARI’s work is the belief that all workers deserve fair, safe, and equitable working conditions. Employment justice which is at the core of our advocacy, ensures that workers are treated with dignity and respect, with access to fair wages, safe working environments, and the ability to advocate for their rights without fear of retaliation. Our focus is on creating legal and policy frameworks that protect workers’ rights across all sectors, particularly those undergoing significant transformation due to climate change and technological innovation. Through strategic litigation, policy reform, and community engagement, we bridge the gap between the formal and informal labour markets, ensuring that no worker is left behind in the pursuit of sustainable economic growth. This work aligns with SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), striving for an inclusive and resilient labour market.

Labour migration is both a response to global economic pressures and a key driver of development. While it contributes significantly to economic growth, migrant workers often face exploitation, lack of legal protections, and limited access to essential services. ALARI is committed to supporting migrant workers before, during, and after their migration, ensuring their rights are upheld at all stages while advocating for a rights-based approach to labour migration. We focus on strengthening national and international legal frameworks, providing legal support to workers, and promoting policies that protect migrant workers in transit and at their destinations. Our approach ensures that migration serves as a tool for social mobility and economic progress, contributing to SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) by reducing barriers and increasing opportunities for all workers.
